Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes?

Book: Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes?
By: Jen Pincott

Self help books are a genre made to help an individual target a specific desire to better his or herself as a person. Weight loss, gaining self esteem, presenting a better professional persona, dating advice, etc. are popular self help genres.

Plot/Summary: Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes? uses genetics as a foundation to deconstruct the basics of attraction for both genders and sexualities (gay/straight), and the evolution of men and women to explain why men and women have certain preferences in physical attraction based on body, behavior and brains. She explains a lot of well known facts such as why men prefer curves over thin body types, and why blue eyed men usually prefer blue eyed women.

Review: The obscure information Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes? has is definitely interesting, but I wish it would have elaborated on certain traits and aspects of gender preferences aside from the brief studies she explained. Even when scientific studies are used to back up her information, I feel like the way she presented the information was more like a Cosmopolitan magazine study, than a professional work that presents information on gender attraction. It does have a lot of interesting information that I would have never known had I not read it such as birth control affects a woman's attraction to men, and attraction by how a prospective lover smells is a determinant of whether he or she is able to provide children and has healthy gene that is great advice for couples who unsure of why they may or may not be having problems in a relationship.

Overall, the information was interesting, but the way it was presented was too broad for my preference. I, do, however recommend it for anyone interested in gender preferences because the information is interesting and has great advice for both genders on how to control and understand certain aspects of attraction.

Author's Technique: The entire basis of the book of whether men have a true preference for blondes was only in a small chapter of the book and explained the obvious of blonde being a rare hair color, and therefore  more attractive to men (which is only true for Western and European culture). I understand the idea of generalizing the title of the book, but would rather have preferred a title more specific to the entire basis of the book because it does make the reader feel like it's a magazine article. The information is endless, and very useful, but the way it gives the information made me feel like I was reading a Seventeen Magazine or Cosmopolitan  article because no topic went too in depth.

Writer's Tip: Generalizing is okay in a basic draft and outline, but always clarify thoughts and go in depth with a topic such as self help because it enables the reader to fully understand why they should follow advice and how something works. Also try not to be too broad in a topic; in Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes? the number of topics covered would have been better as short in depth articles, but it is a good read for anyone interested in the behavior of men and women based on attraction.

  1. Great Post; I Agree. I Dislike When The Title Doesn't Match A Book. :)
