Old Wounds

Book: Old Wounds
By: N.K Smith

A recent book recommended to me is by a new author N.K Smith which used the popularity of fan fiction to gain a basis for publication.

Her book was previously posted as a story on a website that allows writers to have "fan fiction" work reviewed and given constructive criticism. I used to think that the writing world of "fan fiction" stories was obscure and odd, and I didn't even know there was a concept of "fan fiction" for stories based on books, films, etc----but coming across a short comedic story about an obsessive vampire and rubber duckies one day made me realize that there is a cult of writers who write stories dedicated to hundreds of shows, books and films.

Plot:/Summary: Old Wounds is about a teenage girl, Sophie, who struggles with drug addiction and moving to live with her father after several personal issues with her abusive mother and her mother's boyfriend. She eventually meets a fellow high school student at her new school, Elliot, who has his own fair share of personal issues that include heavy child abuse and an extreme stutter that causes him to be a target for school bullies.
Sophie and Elliot both are part of a support group for traumatized teens that brings them closer together and eventually reveals Sophie's reason for moving away from her mother.

Review: Old Wounds is the first story in a series that explores Sophie and Elliot's relationship, and the reasons for Sophie's drug use, as well as why Elliot is antisocial. The subjective view of both characters is interesting because it shows Sophie and Elliot's personal struggles from an outside perspective since their characters have difficulty explaining their experiences to each other. I liked it because it shows the reactions of each character from their own perspective and to each other, allowing the reader to know everything going on in the minds of both characters in why they act as they do. It deals with sensitive topics, but is really well written and realistic enough to be perceived as non-fiction, even though it is fiction.

Author's Writing Technique: N.K Smith's style of writing is subjective from both Sophie and Elliot's point of view and explores heavy drug use, child abuse, trust issues, and the struggle to overcome a violent youth for both characters. Her best technique was using fan fiction as a basis for her characters because it attracted readers who are interested in the original characters she based her story on, and gave them deeper character traits that were easily translated to publication because of how well she separated the characters' from their original work.

Writer's Tip: There are dozens of websites that use the basis of fan fiction for writing. Writer's who are interested on general feedback and constructive criticism for their work can try out fan fiction sites to get a basis on their writing style and improvement, while also reviewing other works and getting ideas on how to improve their own style of writing.

Altogether, Old Wounds is definitely a promising series and can be found on Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com .
