Fan Fiction Writing

Fan Fiction is a genre of writing that is based off of characters of novels, films, television shows, celebrities, etc. It is done online and shared in online communities, often through websites dedicated strictly to fan fiction stories.

Benefits of "fan fiction" writing are the wide audiences it reaches, allowing diverse opinions in feedback, which can eventually lead to publication for serious writers if a work is popular enough.

Negative points of "fan fiction" are that if a writer wants their writing to be published is that it's difficult to identify the characters in the published version from their "fan fiction" counterparts because of the types of editing and way a book is translated onto print, also readers may not be interested in published versions since the names of characters are changed and main characteristics are edited to separate the works from the books or films they were based on.

In this case, a writer should put the effort to characterize their characters in detail to set them apart from the original books or movie characters they are based upon because committed readers will always be willing to support the author in the event of published works.

Where to find it:
There are groups on buzznet.com that feature user fan stories, a website called fanfiction.net and multiple websites dedicated to specific books and shows.

My opinion: Personally, I'm not too crazy about "fan fiction" because I prefer actual books and fleshed out characters that don't identify with a preexisting identity, but fan fiction can benefit new writers or writers who want to share work anonymously to get constructive feed back on how to improve their writing style and stories.
